AC Power Protection need to be applied in a layered defense. The recommended practice for AC power is to provide Transient Suppression at the main facility service entry, at each branch panel and right at the equipment.

The most severe transients (lightning, utility switching, etc. ) are most likely to be encountered at the building entry or distribution panel. In the mid-building area, additional transients are typically caused by cycling on and off, or start-up and shut down of large inductive loads (i.e. elevators and air conditioners) as well as fuse or circuit breaker operations. At the local service panel, many of the transients result from the operation of office equipment, i.e. copy machines, fluorescent lighting and air conditioners. A smaller protector is best suited. For OEM applications, use an in-line AC transient protector rated at 10kA that includes filter network within. Reference the Product Data Sheets (PDF) for typical specifications:

a. Transient Limiter, 50kAmps protection – TLX50 Product Spec

b. Transient Limiter, 100kAmps protection – TLX100 Product Spec
